The Second Phase of the Cabrillo Beach Sand Replacement Project is now under way! The project is part of an ongoing effort between the Port of LA and the Bureau of Sanitation Watershed Protection Division to improve water quality at Cabrillo Beach and assist the City in meeting the Los Angeles Harbor (Cabrillo Beach) Bacteria TMDL. Funded by Proposition O, the project replaces approximately 96,000 cubic yards of sand with clean beach sand to increase permeability and flushing, reduce flooding, and remove a shallow dead-end corner from the beach in order to improve circulation. Phase One of the project replaced sand above the high tide line, establishing a new crown line at an elevation of +9 ft as well as re-contours the beach face. Phase Two includes removal of existing beach sand from elevation 0.0ft Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) to elevation +7.0 ft MLLW and replacing it with clean, coarse sand and recontouring the beach face. Eventually, approximately 118,000 cubic yards of sand will have been imported. |

The Sand Replacement Project is expected to be completed by end of May 2009 and will be followed up with additional beach improvement projects such as removal of the rock groin, to improve circulation, as well as the installation of a bird exclusion device. Together these projects will not only improve the aesthetics of Cabrillo Beach, but more importantly improve water quality. Click on any of the images below for larger views. |
